Happiness Has No Shortcuts

When I attended the funeral of a friend’s mother, I saw her at peace—grieving, yet serene. During that final period when her mother needed her so much, she never chose the easy way. She took no shortcuts. She made the necessary efforts, she was present, she showed up. And despite the pain, she is now able to be at peace.
We often search for happiness and are tempted by the idea of shortening the path. However, the journeys that require real strength from us, that confront us with effort and presence, are also the ones that bring deeper satisfaction.
There is no happiness without commitment, without going through what life asks of us, without “investing” who we are into what we live.
When a false promise of happiness knocks on your door offering to avoid pain or bypass effort, it may be worth pausing. And instead choosing the more difficult but truer path—the one that leads to a deeper, more authentic peace, like the one I saw in my friend.
