Beware of Indiscriminate Gratitude

Some people who tend to occupy the role of the victim develop a kind of automatic gratitude. Many times, we find ourselves in situations where we are being hurt or not truly valued, and yet—because we learned to—we continue giving thanks.

Thanking what, and whom? Are we genuinely grateful, or were we taught that we must always be thankful, as though deep down we did not deserve more?

We should be careful when we find ourselves thanking everything—the much and the little, the good and the painful that enters our lives. Otherwise, we may end up thanking those who wound us for the very blows they inflict. Sometimes what appears to be gratitude may actually be submission, fear, or the belief that we must accept less than we truly deserve.
