Gratitude may be one of the keys to joy. When we recognize what is still good in our lives—even in the middle of pain—a deeper sense of peace can emerge.

I once knew a woman who, after a difficult divorce, remained grateful for the years she had shared, for her children, and for everything she had learned. She did not deny her pain; she simply refused to let it erase all the good that had also been part of her life.

To me, joy is different from excitement or entertainment. It comes from recognizing that nothing is guaranteed and that everything good we receive is, in a way, a gift: the sun, a good night's sleep, our friends, our family, and the simple fact of being alive.

Gratitude does not erase suffering, but it can transform the way we live.
